These 4' x 4' and 4' x 8' sheets of 2 ply  veneer have a wood backer.  The overall thickness is .04 inches thick  (about 2/3 of a 16th) which is considerably thicker than our paper backed veneers.  The additional thickness and the wood back adds strength and reduces the "telegraphing" of defects from the veneered surface through the veneer itself.  The additional thickness also resists bleed through of lacquers and other finishes to the glue layer.
